Welcome from the Chief Administrative Officer
We want to welcome you to Good Shepherd Hospice. One of the first hospices on Long Island, Good Shepherd has been providing care to the residents of Nassau and Suffolk Counties for over 30 years. Mercy Hospice, Good Samaritan Hospice, and St. Charles Hospice came together in 2001 to form Good Shepherd Hospice. As a member of Catholic Health Services of Long Island, our mission includes the values of excellence, integrity, justice and compassion for all we serve.
As a hospice, we focus on assuring that patients and families coming to our program receive the skills and support they need to live a life that allows for comfort and meaningful time with loved ones, and open communication with family. Our staff are experts in managing pain and other difficult symptoms, and they encourage participation in activities that are important to you and your family. Good Shepherd Hospice is a warm and embracing team of caregivers, including our doctors, nurses, social workers, home health aides, chaplains, and volunteers. This team comes together to meet your individual needs, and the needs of your loved ones. With a strong focus on life, Good Shepherd works with you to identify and meet your care goals.
Our medical staff will work closely with your doctor to provide state of the art symptom management to allow you to focus on yourself and your loved ones. Our physicians have extensive hospice and palliative care experience, and will partner with your family physician.
We encourage you to learn more about our team of special caregivers and the care they can provide to you in your home. We also invite you to learn more about our inpatient hospice services, as well as the hospice care we provide in many area skilled nursing facilities. Good Shepherd also offers respite services to assure that families have the personal time they need. Our Child Life Program provides support to the children of our patients, and our volunteers provide many needed services, especially companionship to you and assistance to your family.
We have many opportunities for people who would like to volunteer, including our inpatient center volunteer program, our community volunteers, our “tuck-in” volunteers, and office volunteer staff.
I am very proud of our committed, skilled staff, and thank you again for learning about the services of Good Shepherd Hospice. I welcome calls and questions, and value the privilege of providing care to you and your loved ones.
Mary Ellen Polit, RN,MS
